One day, everyone who is 22 years old or older receives a box on their doorstep with a string inside. It soon becomes apparent that the string represents the length of your life. The Measure follows eight people who wrestle with whether to open the box and the results if they choose to do so.
Society quickly devolves as people stereotype "short-stringers" (those with less time to live) as a liability, or worse dangerous. Do you give a short-stringer a job if they won't be alive long enough to benefit from your investment in them? Can employers/landlords/banks be able to require people to disclose their string-length? Should elected officials be require to share it?
Author Nikki Erlick explores these questions and more through eight characters whose lives are woven together through their strings.
The Measure is a study how divisive our society can become (is?) and the harm that comes from that division.
