The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett

A prequel to Follett’s, Pillars of the Earth, The Evening and the Morning tells the story of the founding of Kingsbridge as a market city and center of religion. Taking place at the end of the Dark Ages – 997 C.E. – the Vikings and the Welsh continuously raid England while local noblemen and bishops compete for power and wealth.

A boat builder turned builder finds refuge and purpose in a small village after he loses his father, true love and and family business in a Viking raid.

A monk desires to build a monastery and church as a place of worship and learning.

An educated, Norman noblewoman travels to England to marry her true love.

Each face disappointment, disgrace, struggle and sadness at the hands of power hungry, sinister peers as they try to build honorable lives.

You do not need to have read The Pillars of the Earth to enjoy this story of medieval England. I love historical fiction and Follett’s descriptions of the landscape, villages, and clothing put me right in the middle of the scenery. If you like his Kingsbridge series you will love this book.
