⭐⭐⭐⭐ A modern day version of the story of Achilles – starting from his youth to the Trojan War.

Miller retells Achilles story through the voice of Patroclus, his companion from youth. Patroclus is exiled by his father and taken in by Achilles’ father King Peleus. Achilles befriends Patroclus and they quickly become inseparable, even sharing the same room. Over time, the two become lovers and form an deep, intimate bond. After studying with the centaur, Chiron, both are recruited to fight for the Greeks in the Trojan War.
A prophecy that Achilles will die after killing the great Trojan warrior Hector hangs over their relationship and Achilles relationship with is mother Thetis. Achilles is said to be the greatest warrior of his generation which comes with immense responsibility and also, immense consequences. The final battles of the Trojan war bring out Achilles ego and hubris that lead to his greatest loss and become his downfall.
I have never read the Iliad or any Greek stories (the names themselves always confuse me!) but I found this a wonderful modern version of Greek mythology. Using Patroclus as the voice, allows the readers to see Achilles as many of mortal peers must have seen him – stunningly beautiful, powerful warrior and kind man. (After some research) There is some debate among historians whether Patroclus and Achilles were lovers or simply deeply bonded friends. Miller’s choice to focus on their relationship as one of deep love makes the fulfillment of the prophesy more tragic.
If Madeline Miller writes a modern version of The Odyessy…I’m in!
