When we first meet Cameron, he is 30 years old and living a responsibility-free live in Calif
ornia. He can barely hold down a job, let alone keep up with his rent. Raised by his aunt, he never knew his father. His drug-addicted mother gave up her parental rights and disappeared when he was young. After finding a clue to who his father might be and hoping he can cash in on years of missed child support, he decides to track him down in the Washington State.
Meanwhile, in a small town on Puget Sound, Tova has a night job cleaning the Sowell Bay Aquarium. While she meticulously cleans the glass and exhibits, she notices that the giant pacific octopus, Marcellus, has been escaping his aquarium. Curious, she begins a friendship with him. The uniqueness of Remarkably Bright Creatures is that Marcellus plays a supporting character role. Chapters are written from his perspective and his insights into the characters move the story forward.
The author puts together an interesting cast of characters, all of whom grow or change perspectives throughout the novel. While I felt parts of the story are predictable, I enjoyed the book and its characters. I feel like I am being a bit harsh giving it only 3 stars. If possible, I would have given this 3.5 stars.
