My Coping Mechanism: Reading

One way that I deal with my emotions around controversial topics, like gun violence, is by educating myself. I feel more control when armed with facts and information. Other than newspapers and magazine articles, I really haven't read much about gun violence and theories on why mass shootings have risen in the last twenty years.

In my research, I found a few lists of suggested reading:

The book I chose to read is Gunfight: My Battle Against the Industry that Radicalized American. I do fear that money is at the root of this evil; similar to the opioid epidemic fueled by the Purdue Pharmaceutical and the Sackler family. The author, Ryan Busse, worked in the gun industry and has become an advocate for responsible gun laws and ownership. It's high on my to-be-read-next list. And I will post a review.

I have read two books about the Columbine shootings that I would recommend. Columbine written by David Cullen. Cullen is an investigative reporter, and the book is an exhaustive look at the shooters, students, police and first responders. The second is A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy by Sue Klebold. Sue is the mother of Dylan Klebold, one of the Columbine shooters. These are hard books to read but provide insight into the tragedy.

If you have found books or resources that helped you understand these issues, please add to the comments.
