Desperate people do desperate things. A string of heartbreaks and hard breaks leds to a failed bank robbery attempt and then an unintended hostage situation. After the hostages are freed, the police try to understand what happened and why. But these hostages are so difficult! Piecing together what happened is impossible with such easily distracted, frustrating people.
I almost gave up on this book about halfway through. I didn’t like ANY of the characters. The two policeman were annoying, the hostages each had their own annoying issues that made the story hard to follow. Then I realized… that is the POINT. The title of the book is Anxious People and the book is FULL of annoyingly anxious people!
So I persevered and was not disappointed. The story begins to fall in place and the characters redeeming traits shine through. I ended up thoroughly enjoying the book! The book’s quirky nature harkens back to Backman’s style in A Man Called Ove – another character that has to grow on you. Stick with it and you’ll love Anxious People, too.
